Marhabban ya Ramadhan!! This sentence is all around me these
days. yes, it is the fasting month, when millions of Moslems around the world
do the same thing, do not eat and drink at noon and try to behave well, to keep
their emotion and anger, and so on and so on. Short, Moslem people try to be a
better person in this month. As always, as it is always said and heard
everywhere. Well I agree with that statement that people are having their best
attempts to be a better person, and actually it is good though for people
urging for their improvement, especially in terms of their faith. However,
there is something bothering while this phase is happening. In some places in Indonesia ,
there are some raids happened on some restaurants. The government legally accommodates
the raids in order, they said, to make the tolerance atmosphere for the Moslem who
are fasting every day in this month. Unfortunately, sometimes that “cleaning
time” is performed in a state of forced. The restaurants owner don’t have any
choice except ‘closing’ his place in the noon. For example, there is a state
regulation of working hours for restaurant in fasting month in Gorontalo. It is
said in Gatra.com in July 10 2013 that the Gorontalo govt. legally obliged the
restaurant owners to close their place around 5 am—5.30 pm, otherwise the
pamong praja would forcedly close them though.

As a Moslem, I’m not in the same opinion with the govt. I don’t
know, in my perspective it is so not necessary. I mean, it is just pestering
the other non Moslems people who aren’t fasting and need food and drinks while
doing their activities. it is not fair. If it is really about “tolerance”
thingies, why should be it carried on forcedly? I mean, you talk about
tolerance toward people who are fasting, but you are not tolerance to the
people who are not fasting and people who are trying to earn money for living. It
is useless and pointless. If you do so, there is no point of tolerance anyway. And
then, aren’t the raid phenomena depicting the Moslems as the spoiled ones? I mean,
why do the fasting people need to be “tolerated” while fasting? It is just like
you are a baby boy who really wants to eat candy and everybody around you has to
buy the candies and eat it together with you so you can be happy and not
irritated. Im sorry if I cant give the better analogy—but, it is so much
self-centred! Well yeah, go fasting then, but don’t force other people to do
the same thing you do. You have your own responsibility and they don’t have any
business to deal with it. I don’t know when lots of restaurant and food courts
are forcedly closed during the noon on the fasting month, it seems like the Moslems
people are crying for help to other people to “understand” them. It is like
they will fail on their fasting when they see a lot of foods and drinks showed and
displayed on the restaurant. In fact, it is not like that. As for my self,
frankly and fortunately, I still can manage my desire not to tempted by the
displayed food or by my friends who are eating and drinking in front of me
while im fasting. And I think, most of Moslem can do so. We are not that weak. Therefore,
what the govt do on behalf of “toleracing” is not necessary. It is just make
the moslem’s image as the spoiled and beginner-faith people. Moreover, it is disturbing
other people activities, esp. earning money.
